Every week Perdeby sends its journalists to experience something out of their comfort zones. This week Perdeby visited Neels Els, a psychic medium.
Neels Els is a psychic medium based in Elardus Park, Pretoria. He covers medium sessions (also known as ‘crossing over’), psychic healing, physical healing, energy healings, structure cleansings, and future readings. Els told Perdeby that he was born psychic into a very religious Afrikaans family, and both of his grandmothers were psychic. Els has been practicing for 19 years, developing a successful and honest reputation in the field. He says that he has only failed to connect to the dead in crossing over sessions twice. Els is also confident in his future readings, stating that “people claim that [he is] 95% on the spot” with readings.
I went into this experience with a very skeptical attitude, however I also went into the session with a stereotype of an overly dramatic person) in mind. When my friend (who is more skeptical than me) and I arrived at Neels Els’ house, all the stereotypes ever portrayed in any novel, film, or television show were shattered. Instead of a person dressed for Woodstock, we met a friendly Afrikaans man with a beard that would inspire Albus Dumbledore. After all the introductory formalities were completed, he invited us into his workspace. It is a very plain room: well-lit with simple furniture and very little in the way of decorations. Five minutes into the experience, everything I thought I knew about psychics was proved wrong. I decided to question preconceived notions, by asking many questions.
After our discussion, Els proceeded to do a reading for us by using a tarot card deck. The cards were fascinating. The designs on the cards are the same as a set designed in the late 1800s. My friend picked her cards first, selecting 18 randomly from the pack which lay fanned out on the table in front of her. While her reading tended toward the work and study environment, it ranged from a successful application process to the promise of stability in her home life. There were some jarringly specific predictions which made my friend question her stance on psychics. My reading was more about family and personal things. Some of the predictions were a bit vague. However, one or two predictions were so specific and unexpected (since I was careful to not divulge much information about myself) that it made me rethink my opinions. I was told I need to stop stressing myself out so much and stop allowing myself to get involved other people’s issues – these hit home, as they are things I have been struggling with for a while.
Going to a psychic medium is not something I would have considered doing normally. The experience was very interesting. Meeting with Neels Els has opened my eyes to all the possibilities in the world, but I remain a bit sceptical.
